Getting To Syria By Air:
Syria's national airline is Syrian Arab Airlines (RB).Approximate flight times: From London to Damascus is 7 hours 30 minutes and to Aleppo is 4 hours 20 minutes.
International airports: Damascus (DAM), 29km (18 miles) southeast of the city (travel time – 30 minutes). Two other international airports, Aleppo and Lattakia offer connections to Amman and Beyrouth Airports. Facilities include banking, restaurants/snack bars, duty-free shop and tourist information. A bus service runs at regular intervals. Return is from the city centre. Taxis are available, but it is advisable to negotiate fares beforehand if there is no taxi meter in the cab.
Aleppo (ALP) (Nejrab), 10km (6.5 miles) from the city (travel time – 20 minutes). Facilities include banking, restaurants/snack bars and tourist information. Bus and taxi services go to the city.
Latakia Airport (LTK) is situated 25km (16 miles) from the city. Although there are no scheduled flights serving this airport, some chartered flights run here.
Departure tax: S£200. Children under 12 years are exempt.
Getting To Syria By Driving:
The principal international routes are from Istanbul, the E5 road to Ankara, Adana and Iskeuderun in Turkey. Enter at Bab-al-Hawa for Aleppo, or at Kassab for Latakia. From the south, the best routes are from Aqaba on the Red Sea in Jordan. Bus: Services are available across the desert on routes from Baghdad via Damascus, and Amman to Damascus.
Getting To Syria through the Sea:
The principal ports are Latakia, Tartus and Banyas. The nearest car ferry sails to Bodrum in western Turkey. There are no passenger lines.
Getting To Syria By Railroads:
Links go via Istanbul and Ankara (Turkey). Change at Ankara for the Taurus Express to Aleppo. The connection from Damascus to Amman (Jordan) has been suspended since 1983.
